How to Redact a PDF for Free (2026 Guide)

To redact a PDF you have to remove the information from the file itself — a black box drawn on top only hides it. Here is how to redact a PDF for free: open the document in a redaction tool such as SladdPDF, draw boxes over what must go, choose Secure mode and export. Then prove it worked: select all, copy, and paste into a text editor. If any redacted text shows up, the redaction failed.

What does it mean to redact a PDF?

Redacting a PDF means permanently removing text, images or other information from the file, so it cannot be recovered by copying, searching or technical tools. That is something entirely different from covering the information. A PDF is built in layers, and the words you see on screen normally exist as a separate, selectable, searchable object underneath the visual surface.

Drawing a filled rectangle over a paragraph therefore adds an object; it does not delete one. The box hides the content on screen, but the text layer travels with the file — along with metadata such as author name, software traces and hidden revisions. If the document is leaving your organisation, both the visible content and the hidden traces have to go.

The US National Security Agency put the principle in one sentence in its guidance on publishing sanitized reports: the way to avoid exposure "is to ensure that sensitive information is not just visually hidden or made illegible, but is actually removed from the original document". The same document notes that the metadata attached to a file is often as sensitive as the text — which is why removing PDF metadata is part of the job, not an optional extra.

How to redact a PDF for free, step by step

You can redact a PDF in five steps: open the file in the tool, draw boxes over the information, choose Secure mode, export, and test the result. The whole job takes a few minutes and needs no installation and no account.

1. Open your PDF at sladdpdf.com. Go to the browser-based redaction tool (SladdPDF) and choose your file. The PDF is processed entirely on your own machine with JavaScript and WebAssembly — it is never uploaded to any server, and once the page has loaded the tool keeps working even with the network switched off.
2. Draw boxes over what must go. Drag a box over every name, account number, address, amount or signature that has to be removed. Zoom in for precision and use the page thumbnails to work through every page. Ctrl+Z undoes a box. Check headers, footers and margins too — case numbers, printer stamps and email footers hide outside the body text.
3. Choose Secure mode. Before you export, select Secure mode. Each page is then rasterized to a flat image: the text layer, hidden objects and layers behind the redaction are destroyed and cannot be reconstructed. Tick metadata removal at the same time and title, author and software traces disappear with them. Fast mode also exists, but it only draws vector overlays and warns that underlying text may in some cases still be extractable — never use it for sensitive material.
4. Export the redacted PDF. Click export, adjust image quality (DPI) and compression if you need to, and save the new file. Your original is untouched on your device, so you can always go back and redo a page.
5. Verify the result yourself. Open the exported file and try to copy text out of it. The next section shows exactly how. Only when the test comes back clean is the document ready to send.

One thing to know before you start: the free version exports at standard resolution, and print-quality 300 DPI export requires Pro with a licence key. There is no page limit — whatever the length of the document, you can redact the PDF for free, with no sign-up and no upload.

How do you check that a PDF is really redacted?

Run the copy-paste test: open the redacted PDF, select everything with Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac), copy, and paste into a plain text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit. If any of the redacted words appear in the pasted text, they are still in the file — the document was decorated, not redacted.

Then add two quick checks:

• Search the file. Press Ctrl+F in your PDF reader and search for a word you removed. A hit means the text layer is still there.
• Check the metadata. Open document properties in your PDF reader and look for author name, title and software traces. Hidden data survives visual edits.

This is not a theoretical exercise. When the US Department of Justice published a large batch of Epstein-case files in December 2025, readers discovered that some redactions were only black boxes over live text: copying the content and pasting it into a text editor revealed what was underneath, and several documents were later pulled from the department's website. Journalists used exactly the same trick on Paul Manafort's court filing in January 2019, when a failed redaction revealed that he had shared Trump campaign polling data with a Russian associate.

A file exported in Secure mode passes this test by construction: the pages are flat images, so there is no text layer left to copy from. That is why rasterization is the strictest form of PDF redaction — it removes the possibility of recovery rather than trusting the editor to have deleted the right objects.

How do you redact a PDF in Adobe Acrobat?

In Adobe Acrobat you redact with the built-in Redact tool: choose All tools > Redact a PDF, then Redact text and images, drag the cursor over the content that has to go, and select Apply. Acrobat then removes the marked text and images from the file and saves a new copy with "_Redacted" appended to the filename.

Do not skip the dialog that appears when you apply. It offers to sanitize the document and remove hidden information — metadata, comments, hidden layers and embedded data. Turn it on. Redaction without sanitization leaves traces in the file, and hidden data is the second most common way a "redacted" document leaks.

The catch is availability: Acrobat's redaction tools belong to the paid Acrobat Pro. They are not in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, and not in Acrobat Standard. If you only need to redact a document occasionally, paying for a Pro subscription to black out three lines is a steep price.

The two approaches differ mainly in method and cost. Acrobat removes the marked objects from the PDF structure and leaves the rest of the document as searchable text — practical for long files and fixed workflows, but it needs a subscription and installed software. Are free online redaction tools safe?

Most free online redaction tools upload your document to a server, which means the sensitive file leaves your device before it is redacted — that is the trade-off you accept in exchange for "free". The reputable ones are open about it and delete quickly: iLovePDF states that uploaded documents are removed within two hours, and Smallpdf states that files for most of its tools are kept for one hour and then deleted automatically.

Short retention is genuinely better than long retention, but it does not change the basic fact. Your medical record, client file, payslip or full bank statement was transmitted to, and briefly stored on, infrastructure you do not control. For personal data that may be exactly what you were trying to prevent, and in many workplaces it is what the IT policy or your regulator forbids.

Four things to check before trusting a free tool with a sensitive file:

• Does it upload at all? Look for a clear statement that files are processed in the browser and never sent to a server.
• Does it survive the airplane-mode test? Load the page, disconnect from the network, then redact. A genuinely local tool keeps working. An upload-based one stops immediately.
• Is there a retention policy? If a tool uploads and does not say how long it keeps files, that silence is the answer.
• What does "free" mean here? Many free tiers are capped by documents per day or per month, or add a watermark. Ours is capped by pages: two per document, then Pro.

The mistakes that leave redacted text recoverable

Almost every famous redaction failure has the same cause: the information was hidden visually while it stayed inside the file. These are the traps to avoid.

• A black rectangle drawn over the text. In any PDF editor, a filled shape sits on top of an untouched text layer. Anyone can select, copy and paste the text out.
• Black highlighting or a black background in Word. The same trap in a word processor: the colour hides the characters on screen, but they are exported into the PDF intact.
• Partly transparent or thin coverage. A redaction that does not cover completely is not a redaction: a semi-opaque overlay can often be read back simply by pushing contrast and brightness in an image editor.
• Shrinking or screenshotting an image. Making a picture small or low-contrast does not remove what it contains; the original pixels are still in the file.
• Metadata and hidden data. Author names, tracked changes, comments and embedded files travel with the document even when the visible content is gone. Remove metadata on export, or use Sanitize in Acrobat.
• The same fact repeated elsewhere. Indexes, tables of contents, attachments, bookmarks and even the filename can give away what you redacted in the body. Review the whole document, not just the obvious paragraphs.

These mistakes catch professionals too. In 2009 the US Transportation Security Administration published its airport screening manual with black boxes drawn over the sensitive parts; the underlying text was still there, and the screening secrets spread across the internet before the document could be taken down.
